Professor Avrum Gotlieb, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Avrum Gotlieb, interim vice-dean, Graduate & Life Sciences Education, has been honoured with the Association of Pathology Chairs’ Distinguished Service Award for his influence as a leader and mentor in the field of cardiovascular pathology and his commitment to medical education at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.

Professor Michael Fehlings, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Michael Fehlings, Surgery, has won the 2013 Winn Award by the Society of Neurological Surgeons, for his work in the field of spinal cord injury and repair. The award is the highest honour for academic neurosurgeons in North America based on research and academic productivity.

Professor Linda McGillis Hall, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing

Professor Linda McGillis Hall, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, is the recipient of Bloomberg Nursing’s inaugural Kathleen Russell Distinguished Professor Award. McGillis Hall will continue to build academic, healthcare, policy, and stakeholder partnerships and extend the Faculty’s collaborative partnerships with international nursing health systems researchers.

Professor Warren Chan, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Warren Chan, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, has won the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship. Chan is a global leader in nanotechnology who develops portable, cheaper diagnostic equipment for infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, malaria and syphilis. Chan is co-founder of Cytodiagnostics, which is among the top five nano-biotechnology companies in the world.

Professor Paul Santerre, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Paul Santerre, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, has won the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's Synergy Innovation Award. Santerre is the founder and chief scientific officer of Interface Biologics Inc., which develops polymer technology to make medical devices safer and more effective.

Professor Tom Chau, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Tom Chau, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Chau develops assistive technologies for disabled children, specifically in the area of communication. His Virtual Musical Instrument, which allows children of all abilities to create music, was the 2010 winner of the DaVinci Award, and in 2012, he was one of U of T's Inventors of the Year.
 

Professor Milica Radisic, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Milica Radisic, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Radisic is a leader in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and has achieved international recognition for developing patches of engineered tissue that mimic a beating heart.

Professor Herbert Gaisano, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Herbert Gaisano, Department of Medicine received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Gaisano is being honoured for his outstanding contribution to the diabetes community in Canada.

Professor Izzeldin Abuelaish, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Izzeldin Abuelaish, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Abuelaish is an internationally recognized human rights and peace activist devoted to advancing health and education for women and girls in the Middle East.

Professor Gaetan Tardif, Faculty of Medicine

Professor Gaetan Tardif, Department of Medicine, received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.  Tardif is being honoured for his role in helping to grow the Paralympic movement in Canada.
